PROJECT MANAGEMENT TIPS: How to set and execute LIFE GOALS?
It is always good to find time to reflect, revise and plan for your goals in life. What is it that you want to achieve? What is your life purpose? What are the key steps to set effective goals and ensuring we take actions towards achieving them? We offer some useful guidelines below:
(1) Set Life Goals: The key is to develop and set your life goals, and continue to review and make necessary adjustments. It can be difficult to map out the end goals all at once as the journey ahead is long. We recommend you to divide it into multiple phases. For example, you are in your thirties and have been successful in climbing up the corporate ladder, you can map out for the next 5 to 8 years, what are the goals you would like to achieve during this phase?
(2) Include Balanced Goals: As you are focusing on achieving your career goals, do not forget to include other goals into your plan, e.g. family, parents, siblings, friends, community, spiritual, etc., those that matter to you.
(3) Sub-divide into Yearly, Monthly & Weekly Goals: Once the “phase goals” are set, it is important to write them down and continue to translate them into your yearly goals, e.g. into your 2015 plan! Subsequently, continue to break them into monthly and weekly plan. Once this is done, it is easier to see your weekly and monthly activities, aligning into your yearly and life phase goals.
(4) Defend Your Plan: As you progressing into each week and each day, you may encounter situation where you have little time or no time to execute your plan! Why? One of the most common “time stealers” are the distractions. E.g. You plan to complete important report to customer this afternoon, but boss suddenly asks you to attend a meeting that you are not sure what are the agenda or objectives. Or your friends drop by and you chat for a while, then phone rings and by the time you realize, it is 6 pm and your report has only 3 sentences! We need strategies to counter these distractions, so that we can accomplish the goals we set!
(5) Make Adjustments: As weeks and months pass by, it is crucial to reflect, learned and revise the goals, making necessary adjustments so that you can achieve your yearly goals and hence you “phase” and life goals!
